Hi everybody!

Wojciech here [Minipax is the "official" handle], I have recently found konekansian stove design for Ukraine. It caught my attention as it's the first open source design I have encountered in my quest for emergency/ trench/ civilian stoves. I'm impressed by the planning that went into design & execution, also taking into account shipping constraints. Great job!

I've been interested in the subject of stoves for a while and would like to share what I have learned along the way about stoves in various forms - rocket, drum, box, double barrel.

I started with the idea of designing a trench save rocket stove - to be used by the troops on frontlines [taking into account OPSEC considerations - heat signature/smoke].

My main consideration was to create a design that can be made in Ukraine with very basic tools from locally sourced materials. New/scrap metal.

I have found out that OPSEC is less of a problem than I expected. Troops know where/when they can have stoves so the design itself is less of concern as long as it's not a “Smoke Monster” and does what it is supposed to do - burn wood efficiently.

Along the way I have found people in Ukraine already making stoves for troops & civilians alike.

This is the cheapest option - around $30-40 for materials.

This design is around $80 per piece, 3mm sheet metal, plasma cut]

In the meantime I have tested the initial rocket stove design and found its limitations in current form

While it is very easy/simple to make and does provide heat I couldn’t make it to boil water - heat radiates everywhere and it’s not burning fast enough to get heat where it is needed fast enough.

While thinking about a solution to the rocket stove problem [insulation?] I came up with a new design - Hell [formerly Satan] which as the name implies burns fiercely and goes through large chunks of wood without problem. Design is “weldless” [no welding required] angle grinder & drill will do the job. Kind of “last chance stove” design.

I haven’t tested it yet after “upgrading” [chimney, enlarged air intake, exhaust holes] hoping for an even better burn! Also the rocket stove has good potential for upgrades - looking into making it a viable option.

welcome. I see that you have been studying several different approaches for stove. It is little unclear which design you see best?

I would say the best stove is the one you can get :-)

All designs have their merits - affordability, simplicity, efficiency, ability to burn large logs, modularity, mass production readiness.

Initially I was convinced rocket stove would be the best solution, then guys in Ukraine created flat pack design that doesn't require any welding. Drum stove on the other hand is very affordable - can be made from large 205l drums or smaller ones - depending on needs. Konekansa design is mass production oriented, while drum stove is more suitable for DIY maker.

All in all, the most important part is to provide Ukrainians with options to choose from. The more the merrier.
